The guidelines introduce the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), which aims to help companies in Malaysia source renewable energy. The scheme allows businesses to buy green electricity directly from renewable energy developers (REDs) through open access to the electricity grid. It is part of Malaysia’s effort to address climate change and achieve a renewable energy target of 70% by 2050.

Tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 to meet COP28 goals are “feasible”, the International Energy Agency has said in a report. The document, published on Tuesday, says that while conditions are favourable, hitting the targets – “the North Star for what the energy sector needs to do” – will require a huge push to boost storage capacity and grid connections.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$500 million policy-based loan to help Indonesia accelerate its energy transition. The Affordable and Sustainable Energy Transition Programme will support various policy measures to help the country achieve its enhanced natonally determined contribution and net-zero power emission targets by 2050. This programme is the first of two subprogrammes. The bank's country director for Indonesia, Jiro Tominaga, in a statement stated: "Indonesia is at a critical junc ture in its energy transition journey."

TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) has entered into an agreement with Singapore’s power company, Keppel Electric, to supply up to 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the island nation. This cross-border deal, leveraging existing power interconnections, marks a significant step in strengthening energy cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore. The agreement is part of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), aimed at enhancing energy security and sustainability across ASEAN.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd or TNB, has launched its inaugural Transition Finance Framework, outlining the utility giant’s plan to engage in sustainable finance transactions (SFTs) in the form of loans or sukuk, to fund projects that will deliver positive societal and environmental impacts in support of its decarbonisation and energy transition efforts.

The failure to solve the climate crisis so far is not the result of a lack of resources. While the trillions of dollars needed for low emission, climate resilient development drastically exceeds that of all international aid funding in the world - amounting to approximately 20 times the budgets - this level of capital exists in the private sector and institutional investors. Market conditions, however, create obstacles and restrictions that make it unfeasible for these actors alone to achieve the impact required for systemic transformation.

This could be a pivotal year for China. Its CO2 emissions could fall for the first time since the country relaxed its pandemic restrictions in late 2022. The news follows a marked rebound in 2023 when emissions rose by almost 5% year-on-year, a new report from Carbon Brief finds. The anticipated decline in CO2 emissions in 2024 will be the result of record increases in the deployment of new low-carbon energy capacity, especially wind and solar. Other factors include a rebound in hydroelectric power generation, and a decrease in emissions from power generation and heavy industry.

In a significant move to enhance regional energy cooperation, Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to form a joint task force to boost renewable energy initiatives and advance the ASEAN Power Grid, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced. He said the task force will explore the feasibility of a joint green industry between Malaysia's Sarawak and Indonesia's Kalimantan.

SEDA Innovation Challenge 2024 has reached its final stage, with five projects set to compete. Final project documentation is due by 19 September 2024, and the winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony during the 2024 IEEE R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (HTC) on 1 October 2024. The Kerian Integrated Green Technology Park (Kigip) is one of the largest industrial projects in the country managed by bumiputra companies, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
